3 hours on bike or 4 hours on foot. This is a different kind of race that involves thinking as well as endurance. Search for 68 locations marked on a map of Cuyahoga Falls. Only a few streets are labeled, so stay aware of where you are! Answer a simple question at each checkpoint (e.g., house number of a home with a windmill in the front yard). Want to improve your on and off-trail navigation ability? Join us at Richfield Heritage Preserve for a three-hour session that will feature lecture and field work (rain or shine). You will be introduced to topographical and orienteering maps, take a compass bearing using a baseplate compass, learn some important orienteering lingo and techniques, and generally how to be successful as a beginning navigator and orienteer. Groups such as scouting groups, etc. are welcome. We offer brief instruction at all events and intense instruction at Orienteering for Beginners events. We do request advanced notice of groups.
Beginners should be able to manage walking on trails that can vary in difficulty. Intermediate and advanced participants should be comfortable running or walking off-trail in conditions that could be steep, thorny or slippery. At our kayak/canoe orienteering events, participants must wear life jackets. Participants should be aware of the dangers posed by ticks.
